For some reason some douchecanoe at Disney was under the impression that “The Diary of Anne Frank” should be remade as a heartwarming Disney movie.
David Mamet came on board to write the script and it was being developed by the nice Jewish chief of production, Oren Aviv. However, the project was recently rejected by the studio as being “too dark” . Really???? No shit.
The problem, it seems, was that the screenplay is not a retelling of the famous Holocaust drama taken from the diaries of Frank, as that would have been fine and cuddly (fitting right in with Snow White), but about a contemporary Jewish girl who goes to Israel and learns about the traumas of suicide bombing.
"It's very intense, and dark and scary," said a Disney executive. "It's not a film version of 'The Diary of Anne Frank.' The story evolved into something more intense."
And we can't have that at Disney, now can we? Why not make a film about Walt Disney's personal feelings about the Jews? Now that would be a delightful cartoon adventure!
